Title: Auswirkungen von Zuckeralkoholen auf Funktionalität und Zusammensetzung derintestinalen Mikrobiota

Issue Date: 1-Feb-2016
Abstract:

All over the world the number of overweight and obese humans is growing consistently and the consumption of sugar and calorie reduced foods was observed to be higher in the last years. Because of their good sensory and technological characteristics, sugar alcohols are often used to replace sugar in such products. With the goal of losing weight and in maintaining the general health, the human gut flora plays a key role. The aim of this bachelor thesis is therefore to examine the effects of sugar alcohols on the composition and function of the intestinal microbiota on the basis of current studies.
The effects of sugar alcohols on the gut flora were already investigated in the 1990s, where lactitol was discussed as a potential prebiotic. Current studies verify these findings and show evidence of a positive impact on diseases like chronic viral hepatitis. Studies on the sugar alcohols mannitol, maltitol, sorbitol and xylitol also indicate prebiotic properties like the stimulation of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria as well as the increase of short chain fatty acids in the large intestine. Due to the small amount of data available, explicit conclusions can not be drawn. Therefore, more randomized and controlled studies on humans are necessary.
