Demokratieförderung in Third Places - Herausforderungen und Möglichkeiten in Öffentlichen Bibliotheken

Abstract

Der gesellschaftliche Zusammenhalt leidet zunehmend unter dem Rückzug in homogene soziale Räume. Der Beitrag untersucht, inwiefern sogenannte „Third Places“ – öffentliche, freiwillig zugängliche Orte außerhalb von Arbeit und Zuhause – demokratische Teilhabe fördern können. Am Beispiel Öffentlicher Bibliotheken wird aufgezeigt, wie solche Orte informelles Lernen, interkulturellen Austausch und politische Bildung ermöglichen. Neben theoretischen Grundlagen werden auch historische Kontexte sowie aktuelle Veranstaltungsformate wie „Human Library“ oder „Bunt statt Braun“ herangezogen. Der Artikel plädiert dafür, das demokratische Potenzial von „Third Places“ stärker zu nutzen, um dem gesellschaftlichen Rechtsruck und der sozialen Fragmentierung entgegenzuwirken.

Social cohesion is increasingly undermined by the tendency of individuals to remain within homogenous social environments. This article explores the extent to which so-called “Third Places“ – public, voluntarily accessible spaces beyond home and work – can foster democratic participation. Using public libraries as a case study, the text demonstrates how such spaces enable informal learning, intercultural ex-change, and civic education. Alongside theoretical foundations, historical examples and contemporary formats such as the “Human Library” and “Bunt statt Braun” initiatives are discussed. The article argues that the democratic potential of “Third Places“ should be more actively utilised to counteract the rise of far-right tendencies and increasing social fragmentation.
