Abstract

Die im 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. gegründete Bibliothek von Alexandria war die bedeutendste Universalbibliothek der Antike. Ihr Untergang ist bis heute ungeklärt. Es existieren jedoch mehrere Theorien darüber, wann und auf welche Weise die Bibliothek zerstört wurde, die im Beitrag vorgestellt werden. Die 2002 neu eröffnete „Bibliotheca Alexandrina“ knüpft an die Tradition der antiken Bibliothek an und dient als kulturelles Zentrum mit einer großen Sammlung an Büchern und digitalen Medien.
