Wirkungen der tiefen Töne im Film

Abstract

This work deals with the application of deep tones in film. Because of their particular characteristics and both symbolic and metaphorical power, low tones are an important resource for sound design and film music. The work starts off with prior literary knowledge about the structure of the hearing system, the factors of hearing perception (pitch, timbre and loudness), the characteristics of spatial hearing and the significances we associate with the low tones. The comparison of the three King Kong versions clarifies how the technical development (whereby the LFE channel plays an important role) influenced sound design in the use of low tones. Consequently, several films are analyzed to discuss the application of deep tones in film. Finally, the film project “Memo” is introduced and the use of low notes in selected sequences will be explained. The conclusion offers ideas and recommendations for the application of low tones in film.

Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Anwendung der tiefen Töne im Film. Wegen ihrer besonderen klanglichen und technischen Charakteristik stellen die tiefen Töne eine wichtige Ressource für Sound Design und Filmmusik dar. Zunächst geht die Arbeit auf Sekundärliteratur ein. Hierbei klärt sie über den Aufbau des Hörsystems, die Faktoren der Hörwahrnehmung (Tonhöhe, Klangfarbe und Lautheit) und die Charakteristik räumlichen Hörens bei tiefen Tönen auf. Durch einen Vergleich der King Kong-Filme wird geklärt, wie die technische Entwicklung (Wobei der LFE-Effektkanal eine besondere Rolle spielt) den Einsatz tiefer Töne in der Tongestaltung beeinflusst hat. Daraufhin werden Szenen verschiedener Filme analysiert, um Anwendungsweisen tiefer Töne zu besprechen. Zuletzt wird das Projekt „Memo” vorgestellt und der Einsatz tiefer Töne anhand ausgewählter Sequenzen erklärt. Im Ausblick folgen Ideen und Empfehlungen zum Einsatz der tiefen Töne im Film.
