Abstract:

Olympic Games are euphoric, sometimes polarizing. Supporters and opponents outbid each other in their respective positions. Nevertheless, there is usually hardly any reliable data and evidence of the respective position. The debate is regularly conducted on all sides rather polemically with perceived truths and anecdotal evidence, as in the case of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in 2015. Hamburg’s government had initially been interested in becoming the venue for the Olympic Games in 2024 or 2028. However, this attempt failed quite early on due to a citizens' vote, which increasingly spoke out against the bid. The assumptions and the economic promise of salvation that the 2024/28 Olympics will lead to growth spurts for Hamburg, the metropolitan region and its population and bring enormous benefits to all those involved throughout northern Germany are nevertheless not without problems. The problem is, for example, who benefits from what in what way. Likewise, the assumption on the part of opponents that social budgets would be cut directly in favour of the Olympic Games is clearly too short-sighted. Rather, a macroeconomic and political accounting which focuses in particular on the budgetary policy and the state budget of the Hamburg Senate must be taken into consideration. Only after this consideration, do both assumptions and fears become clearer. Only an analysis of the conditions, which is supported by a regional economic point of view, would refer to the complex subject matter and the relationships. However, short-term and microeconomic individual views, and their mere sequences on both sides dominate the debate between the opponents and supporters of the 2024/28 Olympic Games. This fact also reveals the structure of thought as well as gaps in thinking and contemplation.
