Abstract:

Insulin resistance is one of the major determining factors in the development of prediabetes or type 2 diabetes mellitus. The increasing prevalence of insulin resistance in the context of prediabetes or type 2 diabetes explains why potential preventive or therapeutic approaches are the subject of current research. The relevance of type 2 diabetes is particularly evident in the problem of the development of secondary diseases and as one of the risk factors of the metabolic syndrome. Meanwhile, many observational studies have been able to identify an inverse relationship between the presence of insulin resistance and an existing vitamin D deficiency. Based on the demonstrated presence of vitamin D receptors throughout the body, it is hypothesized that vitamin D may have an impact on, among other things, existing insulin resistance. Accordingly, this thesis addresses the question of whether vitamin D supplementation could have an influence on the parameters of insulin resistance by compensating for an existing diagnosed vitamin D deficiency and, as a result, could represent a potential preventive or therapeutic approach with regard to insulin resistance.
