The subject of this work is chance and its role in generative art. Starting from an illumination of the scientific deterministic view of chance, the associated possibilities of generating pseudo-random numbers and a definition of generative art, a look is taken at the roots of computer art in the 1960s. Building on the foundation of an analytical view of art through Max Bense's information aesthetics and Frieder Nake's further practical implementation, a use of chance as human intuition within a simulation of art production crystallizes. These historical and philosophical perspectives are supplemented by a look at approaches to generative art production, which makes it possible to provide a definition detached from the computer. The concept of the cellular automaton, in particular the Game of Life, is evaluated as a suitable algorithm for generative art. The practical discussion shows that random number generators can produce variance, but that further measures are required to simulate artistic decision-making. This raises the question of the autonomy of generative systems in art production. The work understands generative art as a connecting element between the natural sciences and the humanities and pays particular attention to the potential of simulating human creativity through random simulation algorithmic processes.en
