Abstract:

Biodiversity is crucial for the functioning of ecosystems and is essential to agriculture. Therefore, the global decline in biodiversity threatens food security and human well-being. At the same time, the decline in biodiversity is largely caused by the intensification of agriculture. Developing sustainable agriculture in Germany could be supported by biodiversity models that calculate the impact of various agricultural land uses on biodiversity. However, current models have limitations that could hinder the comparison and evaluation of different agricultural measures in terms of their impact on biodiversity in Germany. This paper therefore analyses how agriculture is represented in biodiversity models, and whether all relevant aspects of biodiversity of agricultural landscapes are included. To this end, a systematic literature review is conducted to identify four relevant models of German agricultural research, which are then compared in terms of their land use classification. The classification scheme recommended by the United Nations Environment Programme is used as a reference. Three assumptions about agriculture are derived from the models' land use classification: (1) The agricultural landscape consists of productive land. (2) The intensity of agricultural land use is determined by fertilisation. (3) There is no room for biodiversity in agriculture. Comparing these assumptions with the German agricultural landscape reveals shortcomings in the inclusion of biodiverse structures and biodiversity-promoting measures. Global models, in particular, do not reflect the heterogeneity of agriculture and are therefore unsuitable for deriving measures in Germany. This is due to insufficient data availability. Therefore, in future, the development of a national model incorporating German biodiversity monitoring data and all biodiversity-relevant agricultural measures and structures could be pursued.
