Sampling the World - Soundscapes und Field Recordings in Ambient-Musik: Eine Untersuchung hybrider Klangkompositionen

Abstract

The research project Sampling the World examines the interplay between field recordings within the context of ambient music. The central aim is to provide access to sensory exploration of the world’s sonic environments. The key question is how location specific field recordings can be integrated as compositional elements into acoustic works to enable a narrative representation of a place. Theoretically, the work builds on existing sound compositions and acoustic research approaches. The practical component focuses on field recordings from the Hallig Langeneß, which are transformed into recurring acoustic elements through the use of tape loops and in turn being complemented by genre-typical ambient piano and zither compositions. The use of tape loops, multiple tape machines and MIDI controllers for manipulating acoustic parameters enables an interactive form of composition. An accompanying booklet featuring photographs taken on site supports the interplay between sound and location. The findings of the project indicate that ambient music and field recordings function as interlocking elements in which documented sounds of the world and musical imagination can form a shared evocative composition.

Das Forschungsprojekt Sampling the World untersucht die Wechselwirkung von Feldaufnahmen im Kontext der Ambient-Musik. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Intention, einen Zugang zur sinnlichen Erschließung von Klangumgebungen der Welt zu öffnen. Zentrale Frage ist, wie ortsspezifische Feldaufnahmen als gestalterische Elemente in auditive Kompositionen integriert werden können, um eine narrative Darstellung eines Ortes zu ermöglichen. Theoretisch knüpft die Arbeit an bestehende Klangkompositionen und klangforschende Ansätze an. Der praktische Teil konzentriert sich auf Field Recordings der Hallig Langeneß, deren Aufzeichnungen mit Tonbandschleifen in wiederkehrende akustische Elemente transformiert und durch Ambient-Kompositionen aus Klavier- und Zitherklängen ergänzt werden. Der Einsatz von Tonbandschleifen, mehreren Tonbandmaschinen sowie einem MIDIController zur Steuerung der akustischen Parameter ermöglicht eine interaktive Gestaltung. Ein ergänzendes Beiheft mit vor Ort entstandenen Fotografien unterstützt die Wechselwirkung zwischen Klang und Aufnahmeort. Die aus dem Projekt gewonnenen Erkenntnisse zeigen, dass Ambient-Musik und Field Recordings als ineinandergreifende Elemente wirken, in denen dokumentierte Klänge der Welt sowie musikalische Imagination eine gemeinsame evokative Komposition formen können.
