| de |
| dc.description.abstract | Background: Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are common in competitive sport and can impair training, recovery, and performance. Nutritional strategies are central to performance support, but are often limited by reduced GI tolerance. At the same time, dietary supplements and sports nutrition products (hereafter collectively referred to as dietary supplements) are widely used in training and competition. Many are consumed close to exercise and may be associated with GI symptoms depending on dose, composition, osmolarity, and timing. Objective: To investigate whether dietary supplement use is associated with GI symptoms and whether associations differ by product group and exercise profile/training phase. Methods: This secondary analysis used data from the Nutr-e-Screen survey of 296 elite athletes (75% male; 18.0 ± 4.3 years). A standardized questionnaire assessed diet, training, and GI symptoms. Analyses included contingency tests, logistic regressions, and negative binomial regressions. Results: Overall, 29.4% of athletes reported GI symptoms during the previous 12 months, and 20.9% reported at least one symptom day in the last four weeks of training. Overall dietary supplement use was significantly associated with GI symptoms in the 12-month period (OR 2.46; p = 0.008) and with at least one symptom day (OR 2.96; p = 0.008). Particularly strong associations were observed for carbohydrate products and isotonic drinks. Conclusion: Findings are consistent with current research, but survey limitations, bias risk, and limited differentiation of dietary supplements restrict generalizability. Future studies should assess product- specific characteristics and contextual factors in greater detail. | en |
