Abstract Background: Non-communicable diseases like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, obesity and its secondary diseases have become a public health challenge in industrialised countries and are partly caused by low physical activity and poor nutrition. The cultivation of a vegetable patch is an activity that requires exercise on the one hand and produces food that is valuable in terms of health and physiology on the other. In addition, there are other health-promoting properties of gardening that are conceivable. Therefore, this thesis will investigate the question of the health benefits of home gardening, especially regarding to nutrition and physical activity. Method: For this purpose, a systematic literature search was conducted in the scientific database PubMed and the results of the current research status were presented. Nine publications of the last 10 years are included in this work Outcomes: Four out of six studies show significant results for a higher fruit and vegetable consumption among gardeners. A higher level of physical activity among gardeners was shown in three out of four studies. Significant results were also found for higher life satisfaction and lower mortality. The included studies are observational and interventional studies with different methodology, which limits the comparability of their results. Conclusion: Because of its many health-promoting characteristics, fruit and vegetable gardening is an activity that can be imagined in prevention, therapy, nutritional education and care for the elderly. The estimate the health benefits of home gardening on a scientific level, studies with high methodological quality, such as randomized controlled trials, are needed. In order to identify the field of medical relevance for Home Gardening, particular groups, such as cancer survivors, should be in consideration of scientific research.en
