Die Verschmutzung der Umwelt durch Kunststoffe ist ein weltweit ubiquitäres verbreitetes Problem, das im Hinblick auf die Gefährdung der Meeresumwelt und der menschlichen Gesundheit, insbesondere durch Mikroplastik, zunehmend an Bedeutung gewinnt. Eine bisher wenig beachtete Quelle von Mikroplastik in der Umwelt sind Farb- und Beschichtungspartikel. Sie werden vielfältig eingesetzt und im maritimen Bereich als Korrosions- oder Antifoulingschutz auf Offshore-Strukturen oder Schiffen aufgetragen, wo sie durch Abrieb und Abnutzung eine Quelle für Beschichtungspartikel in der Meeresumwelt darstellen.
Die Quantifizierung von Beschichtungspartikeln in verschiedenen Matrices der Meeresumwelt war bisher jedoch schwierig, da sie häufig aus Analysen von Mikroplastik-Partikeln ausgeschlossen werden, obwohl sie in ihrer Größe und Zusammensetzung (Polymer und Additive) ähnlich sind. Aufgrund ihrer höheren Dichte und einer anderen Partikelbeschaffenheit können sich Beschichtungspartikel jedoch in Analysemethoden anders verhalten als herkömmliche Mikroplastik-Partikel, so dass eine genaue Risikoabschätzung hinsichtlich des Verbleibs und der Auswirkungen von Beschichtungspartikel in der Umwelt bisher nicht möglich war. Dies ist jedoch insbesondere im Hinblick auf die wachsende Offshore-Windenergieindustrie und die damit verbundenen Emissionen von Bedeutung.
