This initiated the idea of an investigation into certification requirements with respect to cabin design and conversion. Background information for obtaining a Design Organization Approval from the responsible authority is presented. The Completion Center concept is introduced and the process chain for cabin conversion is illustrated from the perspective of a medium sized engineering office. An investigation is conducted towards the available representation models used for the visualization and optimization of processes. After conducting this analysis, the Design Structure Matrix representation is chosen. The process chain for a complete conversion can be divided into three parts. A: Offer, B: Conversion Processing, C: Hand Over. The complete process is (to make it simpler) illustrated with an example of a partial cabin conversion (modification). The investigation shows a high complexity of the task of cabin conversion. This complexity can only be mastered in an organization that controls itself rather independently from the surveillance of the Certification Agency. The present regulations pay more attention to the aircraft manufacturers than to subcontractors. This, however, will change soon: according to the European Aviation Safety Authority, the future will see the formation of specialized Centers of Excellence, formed by both manufacturers and engineering offices working on the certification of their products together. |
